Salary Guide 2026: Delhi NCR vs Indore vs Lucknow
Last year, a client asked us a fair question. His Gurugram opening had been live for six weeks with no joiner, yet the identical role in Indore was filled in nine days. Same JD, same company. The difference was the offer amount and how candidates in each city reacted to it. This salary guide is our attempt to explain that difference: what employers in Delhi NCR, Indore, and Lucknow are paying in 2026, and the things that matter just as much but rarely appear in salary surveys.

Same Role, Three Different Price Tags
People like to call these "one metro and two smaller cities." In practice, each one behaves differently.
NCR candidates bargain, and they can afford to. In Indore, most people want stability and a chance to grow without leaving the city. Lucknow is harder to read. Alongside local freshers, it now has many professionals who spent ten years in Delhi or Bengaluru and came home, still expecting metro-level pay. If you use one pay grade for all three cities, it will be wrong in at least two of them.
Delhi NCR: The Talent Is There, at a Price
Need a payments developer? A quality head from a Tier-1 auto supplier? A key account manager who already knows your buyers? You'll find all of them somewhere between Gurugram, Noida, Manesar, and Faridabad. Finding people isn't the problem here.
Getting them to actually join is. A good candidate in Noida is often holding two or three offers, and his current employer will usually make a counter-offer. With notice periods of 60 to 90 days, he has plenty of time to change his mind.
The pay is higher as well. A mid-level developer in NCR costs ₹6 to ₹12 lakh a year. An experienced accountant asks for ₹4 to ₹7 lakh, and an HR or admin executive for ₹3.5 to ₹6 lakh. For most functions, NCR runs about 25 to 40 percent above Indore and Lucknow. A recruitment agency in Delhi NCR adds the most value by staying in touch with the candidate throughout those long notice periods.
Indore: Your Budget Goes Further
Indore isn't the town people remember from ten years ago. The Super Corridor has big IT campuses now, and Pithampur is full of auto and pharma plants. IIM, IIT, and a long list of engineering colleges keep the graduate supply steady.
The salaries explain the interest. A developer who would cost ₹10 lakh in Gurugram often accepts ₹6 or ₹7 lakh here, and the usual range is ₹4 to ₹8 lakh. Accountants mostly fall between ₹3 and ₹5 lakh. A production engineer near Pithampur expects ₹3.6 to ₹6 lakh, while the same engineer in Manesar would ask for ₹4.5 to ₹8 lakh.
People also stay longer, because for most of them Indore is home, and they have no plans to leave. The weak point is senior and niche talent, where the pool is small. For mid-level, operations, and plant roles, manpower recruitment in Indore offers some of the best value in the country.
Lucknow: Don't Underestimate It
Five or six years ago, very few companies would have set up a tech team in Lucknow. That has changed. There's IT City off Shaheed Path, plenty of office space in Gomti Nagar, and real industrial activity around Chinhat and Amausi. Many UP professionals who once moved to Delhi have come back.
Salary expectations are usually the lowest of the three cities. Developers sit at roughly ₹3.5 to ₹7 lakh. HR executives ask for ₹2.4 to ₹4 lakh, and accountants for ₹2.8 to ₹4.5 lakh. Experienced candidates will often accept a smaller package to live near family.
Specialist roles are harder. Once the local pool runs out, a recruitment agency in Lucknow has to approach UP natives working elsewhere and convince them to come home. That can be done, but it takes time.
Where the Gap Is Widest, and Where It Barely Matters
IT shows the largest difference. A developer in Indore or Lucknow can cost close to half of an NCR hire, provided you aren't looking for something rare. Cloud architects, for example, are still hard to find outside NCR.
Field sales show a much smaller gap. NCR executives expect ₹3 to ₹5.5 lakh, Indore offers usually land at ₹2.4 to ₹3.8 lakh, and Lucknow at ₹2.2 to ₹3.5 lakh. In the smaller cities, a clear incentive plan often matters to candidates as much as the fixed pay.
At the shop-floor level, an ITI fitter costs ₹2 to ₹3 lakh in NCR, ₹1.6 to ₹2.4 lakh in Indore and ₹1.5 to ₹2.2 lakh in Lucknow. For these roles, whether a worker joins often depends more on a room near the plant and a company bus than on a small difference in salary.
The Salary Isn't the Whole Bill
Many budgets go wrong here. A cheaper salary saves nothing if the seat stays empty for two months. In NCR, you may pay more but have someone working within three weeks. In Lucknow, a specialist role can stay open far longer.
A better comparison is the full cost of one productive hire. Add the salary, the weeks the role stays vacant, and the chance the person leaves within a year. On that basis, Indore usually comes out ahead for operations and plant roles. For leadership and specialist hiring, NCR still makes more sense.
Remote Work Has Muddled Things
Location used to settle the salary question. It no longer does. A Lucknow developer working remotely for a Gurugram company will now ask for nearly Gurugram-level pay. Some employers handle this with location-adjusted salaries. Others rent a small office in Indore or Lucknow and bring the team to NCR once a month.
On-site roles in sales, plant operations, and the front office still follow local pay. That is where the savings between cities hold up.
Spending Less Without Hiring Worse
Benchmark offers against the local market, not your head-office grades. For sales roles in smaller cities, keep the fixed pay fair and explain the incentives clearly. Plan your hiring a quarter ahead instead of reacting after someone resigns. If you need ten people, raise the requirement for all ten together, because filling seats one at a time is slower and almost always costs more.
Which City for Which Hire?
Keep senior, specialized, and client-facing roles in NCR. Use Indore for plant, operations, back-office, and mid-level tech teams where long tenure matters. Lucknow suits customer support, inside sales, accounts, and junior to mid-level IT, especially when the work can be hybrid. Many growing companies now use all three cities, with leadership in NCR and delivery teams spread across the other two.

Common Questions and Answers Regarding 2026 Salary Trends
Name the city with the highest mean salaries in 2026.
Delhi NCR, by a fairly large margin. The average mid-level salaries for Delhi NCR are 25-40 percent higher than in Indore and Lucknow, and this differential is the biggest in IT and senior-level roles.
Is Indore cheaper for employers than Delhi NCR?
On average, salaries in Indore are 20 to 35% lower, and half of the employees are on the job longer. Senior and specialized roles may take significantly longer.
Is Lucknow a good location for cost-effective hiring?
Lucknow is a good choice for support, inside sales, accounts, and junior IT jobs. Salary expectations are reasonable, and most people are happy to stay in their home city. For niche jobs, you'll need to go to India.
What is the best city for IT hiring in 2026?
It varies by the level of the position. NCR has the broadest skill set, Indore offers the best value for mid-level developers, and Lucknow is preferable for entry and support roles.
How can employers compare wage expectations prior to hiring?
Use the market-specific numbers for the actual position, not national averages. A recruiter doing business in all three markets can tell you where those candidates are currently accepting offers, and that should be the number you are budgeting for.
