How to Choose Employment Services in Kolkata for Hiring
Try calling candidates in Kolkata during the second week of October. Most will not pick up, and the ones who do will politely ask you to call after Puja. Fair enough.
That is one of the first things you learn about hiring here. There are others. A "Kolkata-based" area sales role often turns out to involve Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati as well. A tea company on Camac Street and an IT firm in Sector V share a city but hire from two pools that barely overlap. Then there is the question of whether the candidate speaks Bengali, Odia, or Hindi, which the JD never quite mentions, but the distributor in Cuttack definitely will.
So when you look for employment services in Kolkata, a bigger brand is not necessarily the right answer. What you want is someone who knows how this city and the region around it are actually hired. Here is what we would look for if we were in your seat.

Placement, Staffing, Search, or Payroll?
"Employment services" can mean four quite different things, and picking the wrong one costs you the first month.
If you want someone on your own payroll, you need a placement agency. You pay once when they join. If the role is tied to a project, a festive sales push, or a headcount nobody has signed off yet, a staffing firm keeps the person on its payroll and bills you monthly. For a CFO, a plant head, or a regional business head, you want executive search, which is slower and more discreet. And if you have already picked the person and only need salaries and filings handled, that is payroll and compliance.
Plenty of firms do two or three of these. Just work out which one each role needs before you start comparing them.
The City Hires in Pockets
Kolkata does not hire as one market.
Sector V and New Town–Rajarhat are where the IT companies, BPOs, GCC delivery centers, and newer start-ups are based. The candidates here are younger, easy to find online, and quite possibly holding an offer from Bengaluru while they talk to you.
Over on BBD Bag, Dalhousie, Park Street, and Camac Street, you find the older head offices: tea, shipping, metals, engineering, FMCG, and several PSUs. The roles lean towards finance, legal, company secretarial, and commercial work. These candidates tend to care about stability more than a quick promotion.
Then there is Howrah, Taratala, and the stretch towards Haldia, with engineering units, foundries, port logistics, and chemicals. Out there, the commute and the shift timings often decide more than the salary does.
An agency that is strong in Sector V may have hardly any contacts on BBD Bag, and the reverse is just as true. So ask them straight out which of these areas they have actually placed people in this year.
The Kolkata Job That Is Really Five States
Many companies run their eastern regional office from Kolkata, which means the title on the offer letter can be misleading.
An area sales manager "based in Kolkata" may be covering West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the Northeast. A candidate who is excellent in the city may not want to spend half of every month in Siliguri or Guwahati. Meanwhile, someone from Patna or Ranchi might welcome a role that keeps them closer to their family.
A good agency asks about the territory and the number of travel days before it shortlists anyone. It also looks for candidates within the territory itself. People already based in the region tend to last longer in field roles than people sent out from the city.
Which Language, Exactly?
"Good communication skills" appears in almost every Kolkata JD. It rarely tells the recruiter what is actually needed.
Customer-facing roles in Bengal usually need fluent Bengali. Odisha territories often need Odia. Bihar and Jharkhand need confident Hindi. Some Northeast roles go much better with Assamese. A distributor in Cuttack will warm to a sales officer who speaks his language far quicker than to one who does not.
Tell your agency which languages each role really needs, and make sure they test for them during screening rather than trusting a checkbox on a form.
Hiring Around Puja
This catches out employers from outside Bengal every year.
From late September through the Puja weeks, response rates drop sharply. Many people are also waiting for their festival bonus before they resign. Once Puja is over, things pick up again, and November through early January is usually a good window for closing offers. Poila Boishakh in April is another time when some candidates would rather not move.
A local partner plans interviews and joining dates around all this. One working from outside the region usually finds out halfway through the search, after a fortnight of unanswered calls.
If a staffing or payroll firm is handling your people, it has to work with West Bengal's own rules. That includes professional tax slabs and due dates, Labour Welfare Fund contributions, the state's shops and establishments requirements, and minimum wages revised on Bengal's schedule rather than anyone else's.
A firm running your Kolkata payroll on Maharashtra or Karnataka rules may not see the mistake until an inspection or until a former employee raises a complaint. Ask them which other Bengal clients they currently run payroll for, and listen for actual names.
Before You Sign
A few questions are worth asking. Where in Kolkata, and which other eastern states, have you placed people this year? How do you check language? Do you source in Patna, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar, or only in the city? How do you work around Puja? What are your replacement terms, and how quickly does a replacement actually arrive?
Someone who knows the East will answer these with examples. Someone who doesn't will give you general reassurance.
